First full survey of the South African market for bags, sacks and bags

Plastic bags are increasingly falling into the firing line of environmentalists and legislators; At the same time, more and more plastic packaging is being sold. The market research institute has investigated the market for bags, sacks and bags made of plastics and paper.
By far the most widely used material for the production is polyethylene film. However, in certain fields of application, other plastic films, woven plastic strips and paper also achieve larger market shares. The new study mainly deals with carrier bags, garbage bags and sacks, heavy duty and industrial sacks and food packaging.

Disposable plastic shopping bags are not an environmental problem in all countries. In addition to the level of per capita consumption and the number of reuse, negative effects also depend on how good the respective waste management system and the corresponding disposal and recycling systems are. There are sometimes serious differences. In any case, the European Commission has set itself the goal of counteracting the high consumption of plastic shopping bags.

Some countries have already banned certain tote bags or try to use special taxes and duties to reduce demand. As a rule, thin polyethylene disposable carrier bags are the target of these initiatives. Exempted from such prohibitions and fees are usually bags made of bioplastics, whose significance has increased significantly in recent years. These are plastics that are made from renewable resources, such as corn starch, or at least biodegradable.
However, the composting of these eco-friendly bags is not always going smoothly in the respective plants, so some of these incinerations are still being promoted as the most sensible solution, even if this market has developed very dynamically in recent years. Cartridges made of bioplastics alone are not the solution to the packaging waste problem.

Heavy-duty and industrial sacks have steadily gained in importance over the past decades. Initially, sacks of paper in some segments were replaced by plastic products. In the areas of animal feed or building materials, such as Cement, although paper sacks continue to play an important role;
However, polyethylene bags have the potential to gain further market share in the future due to their positive properties. However, classic heavy-duty bags made of plastic film are now more and more competing for so-called “flexible intermediate bulk containers”, in particular in the field of bulk goods, which are made of a stable plastic fabric, usually made of polypropylene, and can reach a capacity of up to 1500 liters, often serving as transport packaging for building materials, fertilizers, grain or other grit.

There is a trend towards plastic bags in the food packaging market. They mainly replace metal cans and glass containers. An advantage of flexible plastic bags is that they can better fit the packaged good and thus optimize the package size. In addition, these packages can be made microwave-compatible, which is important for more and more consumers as convenience is increased. For products such as lightweight packaging bags and sacks and heavy industrial sacks, modern form-fill-seal processes are gaining in importance. With the help of suitable machines, the packaging, its subsequent filling and sealing are carried out in a single continuous process.
